Lesson: Lego Blocks
Groups decide upon a design, give it a description (a name), and then write down step-by-step instructions for how another group could construct the same design from the six pieces. This activity promotes an enormous amount of discussion within the groups during the instruction-writing phase.
Writing Lesson - Non Defining Clauses
This intermediate level lesson focuses on introducing and / or reviewing defining and non-defining relative clauses. Exercises include a recognition and punctuation drill as well as a text expansion exercise.

Interesting Writing: Descriptive Verb usage
One of the most important steps in improving writing skills is expanding the use of more descriptive language when describing actions. This lesson focuses on getting students to use more descriptive verbs in place of common, general meaning verbs.

Writing Informal Letters
Getting students to understand the differences between formal and informal letters is an important step towards helping them master differences in register required for writing in English. These exercises focus on helping them improve their understanding of the type of language that is used in an informal letter.

Short Writing Topics
The idea of this exercise is to get students to quickly write about a topic they choose (or you assign). These short presentations are then used in two manners; to generate spontaneous conversations on a wide range of topics, and to take a look at some common writing problems.

Young Learner's Writing Workshop 1 - Basic Essay Writing Style
This series of four lessons is designed to help students become familiar with writing an essay in English. The first lesson is designed to give students an overview of basic essay writing style. The final three lessons focus on developing skills that are used when analyzing texts as the basis of their essays.

Young Learner's Writing Workshop 2 - Developing a Character Analysis
Once students have decided what they need to write about, they often have a hard time actually developing the material to include in the essay. For this reason, this interview format exercise develops ideas about various characters which can later be used to help them write an essay.

Young Learner's Writing Workshop 3 - Using Themes to Relate to a Story
Students now have a better understanding of the various characters in the short story or book. Students can now deepen their understanding of the work at hand by analyzing the most important themes of the book and how the character would relate to those themes based on their previous work.

Young Learner's Writing Workshop 4 - Getting Ideas Organized
This final lesson in this series helps students put their observations into written form by asking them to fill out a questionnaire. Students can then take these replies and incorporate them into their final essay.

Sentence Connectors - Guided Writing
This guided writing lesson is intended to help bridge the gap from simply writing sentences to developing a larger structure. During the course of the lesson students become familiar with the sentence connectors 'so' and 'because'.

Reports: Using a Word Processing Program in Class
This lesson plan focuses on developing a class writing project over a period of time and is therefore designed as a general outline to such a project. Some of the advantages to having students develop a report on the computer are: 1) improving fluency through discussion of an "authentic" task 2) improving spelling, grammar and lexical skills through the use of various computer tools 3) deepening student knowledge and communicative ability in one subject which the student enjoys 5) increasing vocabulary knowledge specific to chosen topic 5) indirectly improving computer skills through the "hands-on" aspect of the exercise.

Using the Internet to teach English for Special Purposes (ESP)
One of the problems that faces many English as Second Language (read ESP, ESL, EFL, TEFL, TESOL, TOEFL etc.) teachers is that students expect the teacher to be incredibly knowledgeable about everything! By using the methods in the example lesson - actually you will probably need at least two lessons - you can give your students "real world" English for their specific ESP needs.

Business Letter Writing Lesson Plan
An example of an effective lesson plan employing all four language skills while focusing on business letter production skills.

Dickens' "Bleak House"
This challenging upper levels lesson employs Dickens' "Bleak House" as a study in sentence structure, vocabulary, imagery, and paragraph unity. After discussion, students choose one of the paragraphs and rewrite it in complete sentences.

Lesson: Time Expressions
Intermediate to upper intermediate lesson focusing on identification and written production of sentences based on the correct usage of time expressions.

Lesson: Error Correction
Help students help themselves by using error shorthand to help them learn to correct their own mistakes.

Lesson: Integrating Past Continuous
Lesson aimed at helping students begin integrating the past continuous more effectively in written work.

Lesson: Translating Texts
This lesson uses the power of the Internet to translate a text written by students in their native language, or a page from Internet chosen by students. This text is then used as a means to discuss differences between the native language and English. Great fun for everybody is assured!

Lesson: Writing Descriptive Paragraphs
Intermediate to upper-intermediate lesson aimed at helping students develop a strategy for writing concise sentences leading to well-formed descriptive paragraphs
